Possible excursions

Trang is a really unique destination for picking up some genuine local handicrafts and delicious foods from traditional recipes. The town is not at all commercial and there are only local markets and small shopping centres. However, you can search for gifts in the Thaklang market on the Klang Road. Although most crafts in Trang are cottage industries and made at home by a few family members, it is possible to visit some of the villages where the produce is made and meet the crafts people.

Basketry

In Trang you can find beautiful items woven from rattan, raffia and pandanus leaves. These include mats and small containers called 'Muk'. Pandanus leaves grow plentifully in the mangrove forests of the Trang area and are dyed and woven into many sizes and shape of baskets and containers by the women of the Toh Bun Women's Group and Yadfon Association. Both groups are actively involved in the conservation and management of the mangrove areas. Amphoe Muang is a good area to visit for these items.

Hand Woven Cotton

In Na Mun Si, just outside Trang you can visit the Nameunsri Weaving Centre, where twenty cotton weavers still use traditional methods to create fabric for sarongs and "sabai" the piece of cloth worn over the blouse in the traditional Thai costume for ladies. This area is famous for the "lai look kao" pattern, which originally was reserved for people from wealthy families.

Cultured Pearls

Oyster farms in the region sell pearls, which have a particularly beautiful colour and lustre.

Candies

Those with a sweet tooth will enjoy the sweets for which Na Mun Si is famous, made from local fruits including banana, jack fruit and durian.

Sting Ray Products

At a sting ray factory just outside Trang town, a variety of products are available made from farmed sting ray skin including shoes, wallets and handbags. The skin is dyed many colours and is particularly durable.

Roast Pork

This special recipe, famous throughout Thailand, is traditionally eaten in Trang with coffee for breakfast. The recipe involves fermenting pork with herbs and then grilling until the skin is crispy and the meat tender. The area most well known for this is Muang Trang.

Wooden Carvings

Charming items carved from the scented thep tharo wood and margosa wood, can be found in Ban Nong Pru.

Wooden Toys

A toy factory is located next to the airport selling high quality educational toys made from sustainable rubber wood trees, which have passed their rubber-producing prime.

Shadow Puppets

Easy and light to pack "Nang Thalung" made out of buffalo leather and depicting the characters in the traditional sagas, are very decorative and look brilliant framed.

Locally Grown Coffee

The town of Amphoe Huai Yot is well known for the coffee, which it grows. Visit the area and enjoy a cup in a traditional coffee house.
